Soundtrack - Children's rhymes

During my research on Horror, I was watching the trailers of Freddy vs. Jason and A nightmare on elm street.
The highlight I got both the videos which was highly interesting to watch was the section where there is a children's rhyme playing.
I found it scary and so did others around me, because initially we think 'Danger' or 'Possessed' as children are like gems, very precious, innocent and young.
Therefore, I took this idea on board as copyright isn't allowed and I preferred to do my own one, as it is more original.
So then I gathered a group of young children to sing 'Oranges and Lemons'.
I recorded them and worked on GarageBand as I wanted the voice to sound more childish and added effects to the voice clip to make it tense.

Production of Soundtrack

As I was unable to use copyright soundtracks and so on... I decided to produce my own piece of soundtrack for my film.
I had started from scratch using Garageband, which I found a little confusing as I have never used it before, however I picked up the little things as soon as a was playing around with the instruments and completed my set target today :D

So just to clear up any confusion, I just like to say that I am still keeping the clips from the previous video of 'Reborn' as I felt the narrative was not clear enough and made the audience unsure what they were watching.
Therefore this time round, I have chosen to clear the error and gone with the idea to do a flashback edit... which hopefully gives a better understanding of what's happening.
I have also noted I need to have a range of shots, which was a mega problem last year.

Uploading Footage

Uploading footage

Today, I began to start uploading the footage's I had done over the weekend.
This time I followed my storyboard which made it a lot simple and easy.
Whilst uploading the footage's I noticed there was a range of shots on the candles and many takes of myself contacting the spirit/dead.

However the only shots of me contacting the dead are long shot and a over the shoulder shot.
Doing this alone has been difficult as I have to record and play as a character in the film, it has been the most difficult task I've done to be honest.
Therefore I did as much as I could, as time was running out VERY FAST :(

Ms Pollard and I reviewed the scene where there are candles and a musical box playing at the background... as I had this idea initially. Ms Pollards feedback was that it was great I had range of shots of candles etc... because in a horror movie they don't straight jump into the film...usually nothing happens in the beginning, she also suggested to get rid of the musical box in the film and get little children/or school children to sing a nursery rhyme and edit it.

Friday 11th December the day I chose to film as all the snow had cleared up by now, plus my friend was available to take part in my filming.
First of all the dis-advantage of re-making/editing the film is that I was not able to get the 3 other girls I worked with last year, as they have headed off to University and were unable to do a re-shoot. Therefore I had to get a friend to step in and act.

Brief story
Overall, to understand the narrative, , I had recorded a scene where I (the actress) is contacting the dead spirit (which is my friend) as I was abled to contact the spirit.
(Using the footages from last year) Here, I gather my 3 friends around the table and try contacting the dead. However... there's a shock stored in. As someone dies at the end!
Revenge is sweet.

So, this time around I was able to play around with the settings... etc.
First of all I used tea light candles scattered in circle with photograph's everywhere in a room which is completely empty. The empty room fits in with the generic convention of horror, as majority of the time you find horror movies relating to a particular room or a mystery room.... etc. The advantage of using that specific room was that the room itself was painted red, red connotes death, sacrifice and danger.

However, leaving the recording to 11th December 2010 has left me in jeopardy as I have now less time to do everything. Therefore I have chosen to stay back everyday after school and produce the work to the high standard of my ability.

Costume/Make up

So, I want to dress a little bizarre and mysterious.
Therefore I have chosen to go with the baggy black dress for the opening of the film. I chose black to connote mysterious, hidden agenda and witchy.

I am using a black burkha for this.

The hairstyle I have gone for is creepy and all over the place look which meets the convention of a witchy horror female. Including make up I have gone for the black, thick eyeliner and red lipstick, the red connotes evil, witchy seductive look and spiteful.

Behind camera, I used a heater light as I was unable to access a spotlight.
Plus I didn't want the house lights to be on because it doesn't give the scary atmosphere.
I also used a fan - so it can blow out the candles.

So reasons why I planned for the costume to be black is because it is found in generic conventions of horror/thriller movies.
The connotation of the colour black is usually power, death, evil, and mystery. Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). It usually has a negative connotation (blacklist, black humor, 'black death').

Since I have a very short time to do this, I haven't chosen to do fancy sceneries (not that there is many around in East London.)
However as my genre is Horror, I will meet the convengence of Horror.

Tuesday 7th December 2010.

Miss and I spoke about my storyboard and the rough Idea I have come up with recently.
I have also been told that I have now 2 weeks till christmas to film and get the editing done as I need to do my evaluation too!!! It's a risk I'm willing to take and accomplish.
VERY NERV RACKING! However I will be getting some filming down this weekend, definately!
Fingers cross it doesn't snow as it just cleared up :)

Also today, I stayed back after school and organised my laptop. I also did a review on all the clips I had, so I can relate it to my 'future' filming. This has also helped me recognise the errors I made also boosted my confidence to work behind the camera instead of front.

Change of plans

Due to the weather change I was unable to go out and do any filming as it is currently snowing in London and will not fit in with what I have pre-planned on my story board, I have checked the weather forecast and shows that the snow will be clearing up by next week, fingers cross.

However on 'Monday 29th November 2010' from my house I placed the camera outside my window seal and got a establishing shot of the next building, this shot included a huge tree in the dark which fits in with my style of filming and is a generic convention of Horror/Thriller.

Horror - Film History

Looking in depth of my selected genre - Horror, I chose to do a research about the production of 'Horror' and find out the background information/history of 'Horror'.
I feel this will give me a good insight and knowledge of my genre I chose.
During this research I found out the first horror film was produced in 1920's, this shows that the genre I have chosen to do has been around for many years and contemporary, it is still being consumed.
To make a good Horror film, it generally contains a lot of 'darkness and shadowy effects' this would be a good idea to take on board for my video as it will help me gain the target audience.

The Shining directed by Stanley Kudbrick was rated 8.5/10 on IMDB website, this movie was released in 1980's in the US.
The genre of this movie is an Hybrid genre as it is 'Horror, Thriller also includes Mystery' which is perfect, as this film genre relates to the genre I have chosen to do 'Horror and Thriller'.

The iconography in this trailer are loneliness, death, violence, murder, blood and posibly the haunted house all these represent horror thriller and mystery also the The generic convetions of horror and thriller are as above but also living in a huge house with such little amount of people living inside it as it shows 3-5 characters in the trailer there are expectations of death.

The score is very interesting as the story builds up the score is in time with the film, which is something I would consider to do myself in my video.
The score is very low and has a drum 'bang' 1 - 2 seconds also a high hat every 10seconds or so.

Tamanna Kamali Re-taking AS level Media Studies

I, Tamanna Kamali gained a overall grade E in Media Studies at AS Level in August.
For my coursework I gained a D which I was not happy about at all nor with the grade I recieved in Media studies.
Therefore I chose to retake AS level Media studies so I can improve my skills and knowledge and gain a better grade by end of this year, as I feel I did not give my everything to get a better grade.
I felt there was lack of team effort, therefore I am chosing to do this again by myself to help and improve my grades in Media Studies.
I will be resitting the exams in January and resubmitting the coursework in December.

Reborn- Report

During our editing process of reborn we have stumbled across several set backs. one of the major set back that we had is the changing of storyline due to the lack of acceptance that had arisen from parents, certain teachers and older siblings, that had concerns about the consequences. in addition to this set back, during our editing we had noticed various missing elements to it. it therefore meant that we had to go back and film certain empty spaces that had occurred in our film opening.We also noticed that we lacked in a range of camera angles and shots, yet it wasn't simple to go back and film from a variety of camera angles and shots because of the extreme effort put into our mise en scene, also our actors availability had also needed to be taken into consideration as they could not make the time to film.

what's more is after we had done some editing, our teacher had shown our opening scene to the class, so that they can help give us feedback on what was good and not so good. The audiences feedback highlighted that our film opening was generally good, particularly the mise-en scene. also we had got a feedback of how we used good transitions and effects on voices which helped to identify the genre. we also had recieved some critical feedback which was things such as the use of music, in the beginning of our film opening.

We had chosen to upload a youtube clip of the craft which had shown the same sort of genre that we had gone for as a group, due to the difficulties we had faced when doing the ouija board idea, and therfore later came up with a whole new idea where the film craft has the same sort of feel to it hence discovered that there was a film tha supported the similar type of film that we had made and therfore helped us analyse certain aspects of how we can make our opening scene look much better through the use of editing.

Editing (Day 1)

Tamanna is the dominant editor as she has a passion for editing, playing around with video effects etc. She enjoys her role. Me and Forhana helped in making decisions about which effects to use. Through the editing process, problems arose. Firstly, we cut a pan of the house we filmed on Filming Day 1 to a still shot. We used mirror effects to make the house appear triangular and abnormal. This proved to be very effective, even Miss Pollard liked it :). We used a black smokey video effect to make the atmosphere look cloudy, dark and even evil (to connote dark magic). We also used a peephole effect to emphasise a particular part of the house - a specific window in which the witch-craft activities were happening. Yet although this shot looked great - it was far too short. We also had problems using the cross dissolve transition (from the establishing shot to inside the house) because the establishing shot was too short.

Today was the day we planned to do our filming. We had to borrow a friends house, which was spacious and had the correct atmosphere. Also it was accessible for the external actors, camera women and director etc.
Just as time approached to filming we had a MAJOR problem.
Previously in school, the teachers were concerned about filming with the Ouija Board, due to what could happen in reality. But as a group we stayed strong and was willing to do it. But as time approached about the Ouija Board our family and friends echoed how risky it is, and the dangers behind it.
So I carried out research and found out that the Ouija board, is like other forms of divination, has been used in an attempt to contact the dead, which is clearly condemned by the Bible.
As all of the group members are Muslims we did not believe in this but do believe that jinns (spirits) do exist and we should not contact the supernatural world at all. It is thought that playing with an Ouija Board allows spirits (possibly dark spirits) to access your home.. AND EVEN YOUR LIFE.
As we got to the house we was filming, Forhana's friends mother did not accept the fact that we was going to do filming with the Ouija Board, and neither of her siblings thought it was a good idea either as they are aware of the dangers associated with Ouija Boards.
In addition to all this, majority of our parents knew what the Media Studies work was about, however their main concern was about the Ouija Board. Personally my brother did not want me to take part and my friends told me its not a great idea. We also had the external actors parents telling them the same.
due to everyone's disapproval, we decided not to use the Ouija Board and came up with a new idea, which was still related to the horror/thriller genre. We selected a witch-craft theme as we were all dressed in costume and we didn't want to change the whole theme due to lack time, we went along to do witch-craft which was in some ways related to the Ouija Board storyline instead we was doing witch-craft without fear and this time acception from Forhana's friends mother. But what this new idea meant for us was that - we would have to lose some our previous footage (Filming Day 1) because it no longer made sense! There was no need to use the footsteps as we started filming inside the house, the scene started up with all the characters sitting on the floor.

Making of the Ouija Board

In today's lesson, were did not film because we decided to book the camera over the weekend and finish the filming then.

So as a group we decided to start making one of our main props which was a Ouija Board.
So we went to the Design and Technology department and got 40x40 wood piece for the board, Tamanna wanted to carve the letters in the wood to make it appear as realistic as possible. The group did participate during the time, but Reshma found the carving was time consuming and not as good as we had expected. Therefore instead we got acrylic paint and painted the letters on as we thought about how often would the Ouija Board be seen during the making of the film and it looked as realistic as possible and it looked clear to what the board was about so this wasn't going to look confusing.

This is our finish product.

As a group we was pleased with our final product and didn't want to spend no more time, as time was very precious to us.

However as we got brought the Ouija Board to our media classroom, the acrylic was not dried and one of the group members accidentally smudged one of the numbers which looked slightly baited on the board, but this was not significant as we came up with instant ideas about how we could cover the smudge during the filming process so you would not be able to tell at all.

Today we reviewed what we had previously filmed, with Ms Pollard. She made helpful comments and helped us decide which house creates a more 'horror' atmosphere. She commented on the shots, finding the footsteps effective.

Filming: Day 1

As we wanted to make the house look effective, we decided to film a low rise house in a green area rather than filming a high rise block among other high rise buildings. We filmed a house in Beckton from different angles, using the surrounding trees effectively. We also attempted a point of view shot of one character walking to the house. We have filmed two different houses so that we have more choice. We have filmed shots of 3 different footsteps walking to the house, and each footstep portraying the personality of the character. These shots are taken from beneath a bush, creating a mysterious effect. Reshma

We also spoke about the characteristics this character will hold (the "leader" of her group, she's all "it", her friends look up to her yet she's a bully etc)
We have made a decision on the props that will be used and who will provide them

Today, we discussed any missing elements to our final shoot. We spoke about our external actors and when they will be available. The location to our production still remains undecided due to a missing group member... Tamanna has very kindly insisted that she will type up the script, tonight. The Director has been given a folder which will hold the storyboard, script, shooting schedule and props and costume information. Next lesson we intend to begin shooting, as soon as we have had the opportunity to discuss any absent features as a group. Reshma

Here is the storyboard of our first idea out of two.
This is called " The Stalker "
The story is about a girl walking alone and finds a wallet on the pavement. She doesn't realised that she is being watched by a man behind the bushes... Suddenly he attacks her from behind, grabbing her by the mouth...

Here is our preliminary task that we created as a group.

Psycho Swede

In today's task we created storyboards in groups. These story boards were made from different films.
We then later gave our story boards to other groups.
In our group there was: Tamanna, Reshma, Rujina and Forhana.
We received the "Psycho" and acted it out from the story board which was in details for example: long shot, close up, high pitch soundtrack etc.
